Dune 2000 64 bit installer Patch#
That older games like that are not easy to get to work is NOT because they CAN'T be made to work, but because the publisher no longer supports the game, and isn't going to make a patch to make the game work now. require community patches, made by the public, with the difficulties they will bring along getting the old games to work. older games like Dune2000 or Warcraft 2/3, etc. The point I am trying to make here is that Lotro is under support and under development, and it is fairly trivial for Lotro to make the required changes to keep the game working in the future. Used it with various other games, and had the PC running for over 48 hours straight with no issues. You dont have to tell me about that last bit, my daughters new webcam causes out of memory crashes whenever it is used in conjugation with LOTRO even if it is shut down after a few minutes, it has already caused a memory leak that builds up and crashes the game after about 45 minutes of starting the webcam recording. This bolsters my contention that the issue is multifactorial and those are very difficult to fix, since there are more than one and potentially infinite number of root causes, conditions, and effects. Currently, I don't crash unless I see a ghost lotroclient.exe process show up in the running processes list and even then, those don't always result in a crash.

Update: I did a bit of searching and didn't really find much, other than specific nVidia cards and some driver versions.
Of these, I suspect heap fragmentation that didn't or couldn't get collected and managed happens to be the most common, and just might be darned near impossible to fix cleanly. For LotRO in particular, I suspect it means one of: can't move a driver or other linked code module, can't accomodate a heap operation, a bad pointer, some other error that gets called 'out of memory' because nothing else fits.
The error code and message, while being correct, doesn't necessarily mean what many think it means. Though keep in mind that an 'out of memory' crash isn't necessarily due to a lack of RAM or virtual memory address space.

With all the issues with NV gfx drivers and LOTRO, many players HAVE to run dx9 to mitigate against out of memory crashes from Helms Deep onwards. The advantage of Lotro is that a community patch isn't needed, SSG still fully supports the game, unlike Dune 2000 which is a game from 1998.ĪFAIK you need dx9 to get the game to initially launch when first installed only at that point are you offered the chance to run dx11. Hell, I still play some old games like Dune 2000, which has a community patch to make it work in Windows 10. As long as the game is still supported/developed, game code changes can be made to overcome compatibility with newer DirectX versions. it shouldn't be too much of a hassle to keep the game working on modern Windows 10 systems. The game already supports DirecX 10, and 11 (see game options) so changing the game code probably isn't needed. For starters, Directx 10 has built-in backwards compatability with DirectX 9 calls so as long as DirectX 10 is supported Lotro should run without any game changes needed. Unlike many OLD games where the game developer has stopped support and development a long time ago, Lotro is still supported and developed.
